Sound problems are deceptively broad — "no sound" can mean a driver issue, a hardware failure, a Windows setting silently changed, or a cable that's come loose, and each one needs a completely different fix. The good news is that a short sequence of checks narrows this down fast, usually faster than searching for the exact wording of whatever error (if any) Windows is showing.
Start with the basics that get overlooked
Before diving into drivers and settings, rule out the embarrassingly simple causes — they happen more often than people expect, especially after a system update or a cable getting bumped.
- Check the volume mixer (right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar) — a specific app can get muted independently of the system volume without it being obvious.
- Confirm the correct output device is selected — if a monitor with speakers, HDMI audio, or a Bluetooth device was ever connected, Windows may have silently switched the default output to it.

Check if Windows can see the audio device at all

After a Windows Update specifically
If sound worked fine before a specific Windows Update and stopped immediately after, that timing is a strong clue rather than a coincidence.
- Check Settings > Windows Update > Update history for what installed right before the issue started.
- Some updates have shipped with known audio driver regressions — a quick search for the specific update number alongside "audio" often confirms whether this is a widely reported issue with an existing fix.
