"Display Driver Stopped Responding" — What It Actually Means and How to Fix It

The moment is always the same: the screen freezes, sometimes flickers or goes black for a second, and then comes back with a small notification saying the display driver stopped responding and has recovered. It's disruptive but not catastrophic — Windows caught the problem and restarted the graphics driver without a full crash. That said, this happening once is a fluke; happening repeatedly is a symptom worth chasing down, and the cause is more specific than most generic advice suggests.

What's technically happening (TDR)

This error has a name behind the scenes: Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR). Windows expects the GPU to respond within a set time window while processing graphics commands. When it doesn't respond in time, Windows assumes the GPU has hung, resets the graphics driver, and shows the notification — without needing a full system restart. The question isn't really "what is this error," it's "why is the GPU not responding in time," and that has several distinct possible answers.

Update the GPU driver — but do it properly

This is the most common fix, but doing it the same way that caused the problem (Windows Update or a basic install over the old driver) often doesn't resolve it.

  • Download Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) and run it in Safe Mode to fully remove the current driver, including leftover files a normal uninstall leaves behind.
  • Download the latest driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel's website rather than relying on Windows Update, which sometimes serves an older or generic version.
  • If the crashes started right after a recent driver update, consider installing the previous stable version instead of the newest one — newer isn't always more stable for every specific GPU and game combination.

Check if it's temperature, not the driver itself

A GPU that's overheating can fail to respond in time simply because it's thermal throttling aggressively or approaching its thermal limit, which produces the exact same TDR symptom as a software issue.

  • Monitor GPU temperature with HWMonitor or HWiNFO during the activity that triggers the crash.
  • Temperatures consistently above 85°C under load, or a GPU that's noticeably hotter than its typical operating range, point toward a cooling problem rather than a driver bug.
  • Dust buildup on the GPU's heatsink, or thermal pads that have dried out on older cards, are common causes worth checking before assuming it's purely software.

Rule out overclocking and power limits

An overclock that's slightly too aggressive — whether applied manually or through a factory "OC" mode — can cause exactly this kind of instability under specific, sometimes hard-to-reproduce conditions.

  • If the GPU or CPU is overclocked, try reverting to stock/default clock speeds temporarily to see if the crashes stop.
  • Check the power limit and power connector setup — a GPU that's power-starved under sudden demand spikes can fail to respond in time, especially high-end cards needing multiple PCIe power connectors.
  • If a single connector is used where the card specifies two, or an adapter/splitter is involved, that's worth testing with a direct, proper connection instead.

Check the power supply's capacity and stability

Beyond just the GPU's direct power connectors, an inadequate or aging power supply can cause voltage instability that manifests specifically as graphics driver timeouts under load.

  • Confirm the PSU's rated wattage comfortably covers the GPU's requirements plus the rest of the system, with reasonable headroom rather than running at the edge of capacity.
  • An older PSU that's degraded can deliver its rated wattage on paper but fail to do so cleanly under real transient load spikes, which is difficult to diagnose without a PSU tester but worth suspecting if everything else checks out clean.

Game-specific or application-specific crashes

If TDR errors happen consistently in one specific game or application but not others, the cause narrows considerably.

  • Check for a known issue with that specific game and your GPU model — some game updates ship with bugs that specifically trigger driver timeouts on certain hardware.
  • Try lowering graphics settings, particularly ones related to advanced features (ray tracing, certain anti-aliasing modes) that push the GPU driver harder than standard rendering.
  • Verify game files through the platform (Steam, Epic, etc.) to rule out a corrupted installation causing the specific crash pattern.

Adjusting the TDR timeout itself (advanced, use with caution)

It's possible to extend the timeout Windows allows before declaring the GPU unresponsive, which can help in specific cases like heavy compute workloads that legitimately need more processing time — but this treats the symptom, not the cause, and should be a last resort rather than a first fix.

  • This involves editing the TdrDelay value in the Windows Registry under the GPU driver's settings, which is beyond routine troubleshooting and carries risk if done incorrectly.
  • Extending the timeout without addressing an underlying thermal, power, or driver issue usually just delays the same crash rather than preventing it.

When it points to failing hardware

If a clean driver install, stock clock speeds, adequate cooling, and a healthy power supply are all confirmed and the TDR errors persist — especially if they happen across multiple different games and applications, or even during simple desktop use — the GPU itself may have a developing hardware fault, such as failing VRAM or a degrading component on the board. This is less common than software or thermal causes, but it's the point where a proper hardware diagnostic, rather than more driver reinstalls, becomes the faster path to an answer.
