A "No Signal" message is one of the more misleading errors a computer can show you, mostly because the monitor is telling you it isn't receiving anything — not why. That single message covers everything from a loose cable to a dead graphics card, and guessing at replacement parts before narrowing it down usually wastes money. This guide walks through the diagnostic order that actually isolates the real cause.
Confirm the monitor itself is working
Before touching the computer at all, rule out the display itself.
- Check that the monitor is on and the correct input source is selected — HDMI, DisplayPort, or VGA — since many monitors default back to the wrong input after being unplugged.
- If you have a phone, tablet, or another device with a matching video output, connect it to confirm the monitor itself displays an image from a known source.
- Try a completely different monitor or TV with the computer if one is available — this single test splits the problem into "it's the computer" or "it's the monitor" immediately.
Rule out the cable before anything else
Cables fail more often than people expect, especially at the connector pins, and a bad cable produces symptoms identical to a dead GPU.
- Try a different cable of the same type if you have one available.
- If you have both an HDMI and a DisplayPort option on the same GPU, try switching between them — this also tests the GPU's output ports against each other.
- Inspect the connector ends for bent pins (on DVI or VGA) or a connector that feels loose when seated.
Listen for beep codes during boot
Most motherboards can still communicate through sound even when the screen shows nothing, and this is one of the fastest ways to narrow down the problem without opening the case.
- If the motherboard has a built-in speaker or you've connected one, listen for a beep pattern during startup.
- A pattern of repeating beeps (the exact pattern varies by motherboard brand) typically indicates a RAM or GPU seating issue detected during POST.
- No beep at all can mean the system isn't completing POST, which points toward a more fundamental power or motherboard issue rather than just a display problem.

Reseat the RAM — this fixes more of these than people expect
RAM that's worked loose from its slot, or that's developed a poor contact from dust and temperature cycling, is one of the most common causes of a system that powers on with fans spinning but produces no display output at all.
- Power off completely and unplug the system.
- Remove each RAM stick and reseat it firmly, making sure both side clips click into place.
- If you have multiple sticks, try booting with just one stick at a time in different slots — this identifies both a bad stick and a bad slot.
- Clean the gold contacts gently with an eraser if they look tarnished, which occasionally restores a connection that visually looks fine but isn't making solid contact.
Check whether the GPU is actually seated and powered
If the system has a dedicated graphics card, it's worth confirming the basics before suspecting a hardware failure.
- Confirm the PCIe power connectors from the power supply are fully seated into the GPU — a partially connected power cable can let the card power on partially without functioning.
- Check that the GPU is fully seated in the PCIe slot and that the slot's retention clip has closed properly.
- If you're plugging the monitor into the motherboard's video output while a dedicated GPU is installed, that won't work on most systems — the motherboard output is disabled once a discrete GPU is present, so make sure the cable is going into the GPU itself.
Test with integrated graphics if available
If the CPU has integrated graphics, this test isolates the GPU from the rest of the system entirely.
- Remove the dedicated GPU completely.
- Plug the monitor into the motherboard's video output instead.
- If the system now displays normally, the dedicated GPU is the likely point of failure.
- If there's still no signal even on integrated graphics, the problem lies elsewhere — motherboard, RAM, or CPU rather than the graphics card.
When it points to the motherboard or CPU
If cables, the monitor, RAM reseating, and GPU isolation all check out without success, what's left is a smaller list: a failed motherboard video circuit, a CPU that isn't seated or making contact correctly, or in rarer cases bent pins in the CPU socket from a previous installation. This is the point where visual inspection of the socket under good light, and confirming the CPU cooler is mounted with even pressure, becomes worthwhile before assuming the worst.
Knowing when to bring it in
A "No Signal" problem with no beep codes and no obvious cause after ruling out cables, RAM, and GPU seating usually means the fault is somewhere less accessible — a motherboard-level failure or a CPU issue that needs proper bench testing with known-good spare parts to isolate. At that point, continuing to swap components blindly costs more in time and mismatched parts than a focused diagnostic would.
