Keyboard Not Working or Keys Sticking? Here's How to Actually Fix It

A keyboard problem usually falls into one of two very different categories: a software issue that makes a perfectly healthy keyboard act broken, or a physical problem that no amount of settings-tweaking will fix. Figuring out which one you're dealing with early saves a lot of wasted time, so this guide starts with the fastest way to tell them apart before getting into the fixes for each.

The single fastest test: try it somewhere else

Before anything else, isolate whether the problem is the keyboard itself or the computer it's plugged into.

  • For an external keyboard, plug it into a different computer or a phone/tablet that supports USB keyboards, if you have one available.
  • For a laptop's built-in keyboard, plug in an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard and see if it works normally — if it does, the problem is isolated to the built-in keyboard specifically, not Windows as a whole.
  • If the same keys fail on a completely different device, you're dealing with a physical keyboard problem. If it works fine elsewhere, the cause is on the software side of your original computer.

Check Sticky Keys and Filter Keys first

Windows has built-in accessibility features that can make a keyboard behave strangely if they get toggled on by accident, and this is one of the most common "my keyboard is broken" complaints that isn't actually a hardware issue at all.

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and check whether Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, or Toggle Keys are turned on.
  • Filter Keys specifically can make the keyboard ignore brief or repeated keystrokes, which feels exactly like keys not responding.
  • These get toggled on accidentally more often than people expect — holding Shift for 8 seconds turns on Sticky Keys automatically, which is easy to do without noticing.

Update or reinstall the keyboard driver

A corrupted or outdated driver can cause anything from a fully unresponsive keyboard to specific keys that stop working while others function normally.

  • Open Device Manager and expand "Keyboards."
  • Right-click the listed keyboard and select "Uninstall device," then restart — Windows reinstalls the driver automatically on boot.
  • If there's a yellow warning icon next to the keyboard entry, that's a direct sign of a driver conflict worth resolving before assuming hardware failure.

Check language and layout settings for "wrong key" symptoms

Sometimes a keyboard isn't broken at all — it's typing the correct key, but Windows is interpreting it through the wrong layout.

  • Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language & region and confirm the correct keyboard layout is selected and set as default.
  • Symbols appearing in the wrong place, or specific punctuation keys producing unexpected characters, is a classic sign of a layout mismatch rather than a hardware fault.
  • This is especially common after a Windows update silently adds or switches a language pack.

Sticky keys in the literal sense — cleaning a physical key

If a key is physically slow to spring back or feels different from the others when pressed, that's usually debris or a spilled liquid residue under the keycap rather than an electrical fault.

  • Power off the device completely before attempting any cleaning.
  • For a desktop keyboard, gently pry the affected keycap off with a flat tool (many keyboards are designed for this) and clean around the switch with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab.
  • For a laptop keyboard, be more cautious — laptop key mechanisms are more fragile and harder to reassemble correctly, so if a key doesn't come off with light, even pressure, it's safer to stop rather than force it.
  • Compressed air blown at an angle under the keycap, without removing it, is a safer first step for laptops before attempting removal.

When liquid was actually spilled

If the sticking or non-responsive keys started right after a spill, the situation calls for a different approach than routine cleaning.

  • Power off immediately and, for a laptop, remove the battery if it's user-removable — continuing to run power through a wet keyboard risks a short circuit that damages the motherboard underneath.
  • Turn the device upside down to let liquid drain away from internal components rather than deeper into them.
  • Let it dry completely for at least 24-48 hours before powering on again — testing too early to "see if it still works" is one of the most common ways a recoverable spill turns into permanent damage.
  • Sugary or sticky liquids (soda, coffee with sugar) leave residue that causes problems weeks later even after the keyboard seems to work again, so a proper cleaning under the keys is worth doing even if it powers on fine initially.

Multiple keys failing in a pattern often means a ribbon cable

If several keys in a specific row, column, or section of the keyboard stop working together while the rest function normally, this points toward a specific type of failure rather than random individual key damage.

  • Keyboards are wired in a grid, and a single damaged connection point can take out an entire row or column at once — this is a strong signal it's not "several keys broken" but one connection point failing.
  • On laptops, this often means the ribbon cable connecting the keyboard to the motherboard has a partial break, sometimes from the laptop being opened and closed at an odd angle repeatedly, or from a previous repair that didn't fully reseat the connector.
  • This failure pattern is a hardware issue that typically requires reseating or replacing the ribbon cable rather than something fixable through cleaning or driver changes.

Testing whether it's the keyboard or the keyboard controller

On laptops specifically, it's worth distinguishing between the physical keyboard failing and the small controller chip that manages it failing instead.

  • If no keys work at all, including function keys and the power button if it's part of the keyboard deck, a controller-level failure is more likely than every single key mechanism failing simultaneously.
  • If an external keyboard also fails to work on the exact same laptop (but works on other computers), that points toward a broader USB or system-level issue rather than the built-in keyboard specifically.

When it's time for a physical repair

Cleaning fixes debris-related sticking, driver reinstalls fix most software confusion, and accessibility settings resolve more "broken keyboard" complaints than people expect. What's left after ruling all of that out — a ribbon cable failure, liquid damage that's reached the circuit level, or a controller failure — needs actual hardware repair rather than more troubleshooting. Continuing to test a keyboard that's shorting internally, in particular, risks the damage spreading to the motherboard underneath it.
